Hereford Fungus Eaters

A strange old pic from "The Graphic" 1873. A walk with the Hereford Fungus Eaters.The picture shows what could be local dignitaries and various locations in and around Herefordshire.Holme Lacy House can be seen on the right centre of picture and some sort of meeting held in Hereford Shire Hall can also be seen towards bottom of picture.
Additional Information

Around the 1870s and 1880s each autumn the Woolhope Club had annual
Fungus Forays.  The Fungus Forays lasted about a week and members of
the Woolhope Club - and their visitors who came from far and wide -
toured around the Herefordshire countryside looking for fungi to
identify and investigate.  This was very gentlemanly scientific
research.  The week's efforts finished with a clebratory meal at the
Green Dragon in Hereford.  This cartoon of the fungus foray was almost
certainly drawn by Worthington George Smith (who was the chief
illustrator of the Gardeners Chronicle).  Not a Herefordian, he is an
interesting character in his own right.  Top left you can see Dr Henry
Graves Bull, quite a Victorian polymath.  As well as fungi he was
interested in birds and apples.  He was joint author of The
Herefordshire Pomona - one of the finest books, if not the finest book
about apples and pears ever published.  (The cider museum displays
some of the original artwork for the colour plates - Bull's daughter
Edith Elizabeth was one of the artists responsible).  Fuller details
of all the Fungus Forays can be found in the Transactions of the
Wollhope Club although the cartoons do not appear there - you will
need to read through the Graphic for other years.  The club still has
its library at Hereford Library and it is open, I believe, on
Thursdays.

One Year Old Today.

One year old today, 4500 hits on "Old Hereford Pics" and nearly 500 friends on our "Facebook" page.I would just like say it started out as just a thought, showing off a few old pics I had around the house and we have come this far in such a short time.I hope along the way I have not trod on too many toes and put any one's nose out of joint.It seems to have hit the right chord with people who live, have lived or at some time had a connection with the old city.I must say it has been a lot of hard work but I think worth it judging by the comments we have received.
I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to have a look and all those who have contributed at some point through the year.
A very special thank you must go to Clive Massey for all his help and support in getting me up and running.I could not have done it without your help.
I would also like to thank Gary Morris who has been such a great help on the Facebook site and without his wealth of knowledge I don't know where we would be.Keep it up Gary.
Lastly I would like to say a big THANK YOU to my wonderful wife Jo and beautiful daughter Charlotte for putting up with me over the last 12 months while working on this project.

Anyway I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mott The Hoople/Edgar Street 1971.

Hereford United Football Club Monday 30th August 1971 and local band "Mott the Hoople" are top of the bill for this rare concert staged at "Hereford United's"Edgar Street ground. Although the band had not reached there peak "All The Young Dudes" was released in 1972, they still managed to pull a crowd of over 3ooo into the Edgar Street ground on a warm August Bank Holiday Monday in 1971.

Another local band "Karakorum" included a young musician by the name of Martin Chambers who later went on to form another successful local band "The Pretenders"

Take a look at the ticket price and on the day a massive 77 pence.My how time's have changed.

Bulmers Cider.

West Country Ales (Ceramic Plaques)

The very distinctive "West Country Ales" ceramic plaques located on many Pubs around Hereford."West Country Ales" were established in 1958 when the "Stroud and Cheltenham" breweries merged.Strange as it was both breweries started brewing in 1760 hence the date on the plaques.These plaques can be seen in Herefordshire,Gloucestershire,Worcestershire,Oxfordshire,Wiltshire and even some parts of Wales.
The distingtive "castle or tower" design was first used by the "Cheltenham Brewery". After the Second World War it acquired the "Hereford and Tredegar"breweries becoming the "Cheltenham and Hereford"brewery.The original design read "Cheltenham & Hereford" where it now reads "West Country Ales.

Rolling Stones,Hillside Ballroom.

These were the days when you just turned up on the evening and you were always guaranteed a top line act of the day.As you can see this night just happened to be the one and only appearance in Hereford of the Rolling Stones .

Unfortunately the Hillside Ballroom fell on hard times and was later known as "Mr Ts" before it's demolition in the 198os.Today there are no trace's of any buildings from that area left to see today.

Franklin Barnes Building.

The Franklin Barnes Garden Centre in Commercial Square Hereford.The building was rebuilt in the 1960s to run along side the new inner ring road. At the the time this was quite futuristic for the city of Hereford.But did you know another of Hereford's land mark buildings was closed so Franklin Barnes could concentrate on their business in Commercial Square. Number 13 Bridge Street "The Crystal Rooms".

The Campers Shop.

Old 1960 catalog from George Holloway & Webb Ltd "The Campers Shop" in Victoria Street.Can anyone tell me is this where "Jessons"old store used to be? Note the old telephone number.

Entertainments Guide.

Entertainments Guide from the old "Mid Week Times Bulletin"20th April 1965.This old ad was found in what was at the time called the "Hereford Times and the Hereford Citizen & Bulletin".Looks like this was a great midweek paper with loads of news & sports coverage and yes we had two cinemas then.
