Mott The Hoople/Edgar Street 1971.

Hereford United Football Club Monday 30th August 1971 and local band "Mott the Hoople" are top of the bill for this rare concert staged at "Hereford United's"Edgar Street ground. Although the band had not reached there peak "All The Young Dudes" was released in 1972, they still managed to pull a crowd of over 3ooo into the Edgar Street ground on a warm August Bank Holiday Monday in 1971.

Another local band "Karakorum" included a young musician by the name of Martin Chambers who later went on to form another successful local band "The Pretenders"

Take a look at the ticket price and on the day a massive 77 pence. My how time's have changed.

If anyone has any recollections of that day it would be great to let us know here at Old Hereford Pics.

Ariel View,Commercial Square 1940s/1950s.

An ariel view of Commercial Square taken some time in the 1940s early 1950s.As you can see there was very little traffic passing through the city in those days, a very different story from today's traffic jams. It's hard to think why on earth they would want to build a ring road so close to the city's main shopping centre in the years that followed.

Paddling Pool.(King George's Playing Fields)

Picture of the old paddling pool situated on the (King George's Playing Fields) in the mid 60s.
In the background can be seen one of the many traveling fairs that visited Hereford in those days, now the site of the "Hereford Leisure Pool".Also visible in the background is "Dry Bridge House" which in those days was very near close to collapse.
Sorry about the quality of the picture it came from a old copy of The Hereford Citizen.

Buzz Music.

Buzz Music record store in Widemarsh Street early 1980s.Buzz Music was situated opposite the "Old Harp Pub" and was demolished to make way for Garrick House and the multi story car park.In my youth I spent many hours along with many others listening to the great music that was played in there at the time.
Many Thanks to "Ian Morgan" for the picture.

West Country Ales (Ceramic Plaques)

The very distinctive "West Country Ales" ceramic plaques located on many Pubs around Hereford."West Country Ales" were established in 1958 when the "Stroud and Cheltenham" breweries merged.Strange as it was both breweries started brewing in 1760 hence the date on the plaques. These plaques can be seen in Herefordshire,Gloucestershire,Worcestershire,Oxfordshire,Wiltshire and even some parts of Wales.
The distingtive "castle or tower" design was first used by the "Cheltenham Brewery". After the Second World War it acquired the "Hereford and Tredegar"breweries becoming the "Cheltenham and Hereford"brewery. The original design read "Cheltenham & Hereford" where it now reads "West Country Ales.

Hereford in Flood 1960.

Ariel view from 1960 of Hereford in flood south of the "River Wye". As you can see this was quite devastating at the time with no flood defences to hold the river back in those days. This is a great arial picture and shows just how easily the two sides of the city could be cut off by such devastating floods.Take note of how the road layout has changed since the building of the Greyfriers Bridge.

The New Hereford Theatre.

The "New Hereford Theatre" in Edgar Street as it was before it was replaced with "The Courtyard Centre".The building was was formally the "Hereford Baths" built in 1929. It was closed down when Hereford got its new Leisure Pool in the mid 1970s.The theatre was opened on 5th March 1979 as "The Nell Gwynne Theatre and Arts Centre".

This was a massive achievement by the enthusiasts and volunteer's who had set up a Charitable Trust to raise monies for the Theatre. The Theatre closed in 1984 and re-opened on 1st April 1985 as the"New Hereford Theatre".

The "Courtyard" now stands on the same site as the original building.

Hereford & Gloucester Canal at Hereford.

Old Greetings Card produced by the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Society from the 1980s.
As you can see this is the middle basin in Hereford as it appeared in the mid nineteenth century. The canal was 34 miles long with 21 locks and could accommodate boats 7'6" wide and 70' long. The canal when completed ran from Gloucester to Hereford via Newent & Ledbury. The canal was started in 1791 and by 1793 the first 3.5 miles from Over near Gloucester was complete.By 1798 the canal had almost reached Ledbury. However, the company ran out of funds and it was not until 1839 that re-building started again. The canal eventually reached Hereford in May 1845.

Rolling Stones,Hillside Ballroom.

Old Promo poster from the "Hillside Ballroom" in Maybury Avenue 13th December 1963.
These were the days when you just turned up on the evening and you were always guaranteed a top line act of the day.As you can see this night just happened to be the one and only appearance in Hereford of the Rolling Stones .
Unfortunately the Hillside Ballroom fell on hard times and was later known as "Mr Ts" before it's demolition in the 198os.Today there are no trace's of any buildings from that area left to see today.

King's Acre Halt Caravan Park.

"King's Acre Halt Garage and Caravan Park."

Old Donovan C.Wilson Postcard possibly from the late 1950s showing the old garage and caravan park in all it's glory. Notice the site is surrounded by fruit orchards, at the time a huge industry in Herefordshire there are also some great looking old vehicles on the forecourt of the garage.

Franklin Barnes Building.

The Franklin Barnes Garden Centre in Commercial Square Hereford. The building was rebuilt in the 1960s to run along side the new inner ring road. At the the time this was quite futuristic for the city of Hereford. But did you know another of Hereford's land mark buildings was closed so Franklin Barnes could concentrate on their business in Commercial Square. Number 13 Bridge Street "The Crystal Rooms".

The birthplace of the famous English actor/playwright "David Garrick". Born in Maylord Street Hereford on the 19th February 1717.The plaque on his birthplace wall actually says 1716 not sure why this is, there seems to be some confusion.
